What Nick Really Thinks

In chapter 5 several key events occur that make Nick change his opinion of Gatsby, Daisy, and Jordan. To start off with in the previous chapters Nick has thought of Gatsby as credible to a certain extent. Nick trusts him, but not fully. For example in chapter 4 when Gatsby confesses he is from the West Nick questions " where from in the West"? This implies Nick is uncertain of the truth to what Gatsby says. Again we see Nick's doubt surface while they are going to Gatsby's house, Nick questions Gatsby about what kind of business he does. Gatsby replies in an ambiguous way by saying ' I was in the drug business, and then I was in the Oil business". As the chapter commences and Gatsby has his meeting with Daisy, Nick sees Gatsby act strangely. He is reclusive, acts awkwardly, and is unconfident. He even nearly breaks Nick's clock, something that the Gatsby Nick remembers would never do. Nick sees the true Gatsby that has hidden under a confident mask this whole time and he reacts by Judging Gatsby's true colors. For example he conveys Gatsby's actions as bosy when Gatsby orders Klipspringer to play the piano.

Also in chapter 5 Nick's opinion of Daisy changes as well. At first Nick views Gatsby as shallow and bitter. Her willingness to gossip with Nick about the butler shows that she is shallow and the mean snarky comments towards Tom show her bitterness over the affair and brutal treatment she receives. In this chapter though we see Daisy as hopeful. This is a Daisy from the past which we can tell by Gatsby's initial excitement but towards the end of the chapter we learn that she is still changed from Gatsby's expectations.

Finally we learn quite a bit about Jordan up to this point. She starts off being superficial, and kind of ditzy in the beginning but towards this point we realize that she is quite manipulative and a lier. For example Nick notes her tendency to choose people she feels she can control. Nick also tells about Jordan's acts of lying which seem a little to numerous to be counted as coincidence. With all of this newly found information we can see the true characters of the Great Gatsby
